His ballets The Firebird, Petrushka and The Rite of Spring, originally produced in Paris by Sergei Diaghilev, garnered him international fame. The latter ballet famously caused a riot in the audience, that is wrongly attributed to its unusual artistic approach. It was, in fact, a pre-organised ambush by anti-Diaghilev forces.
