Peter Willems deve lasciare Singapore dove ha conti da regolare con la giustizia. Per convincere il capitano Lingard, suo protettore, a portarlo via con sé, minaccia di suidicidarsi. Abbandonata la moglie Peter si imbarca sulla nave del capitano che, seguendo una rotta segreta, lo porta ad un approdo particolarmente adatto agli scambi commerciali con gli indigeni malesi. Il capitano Lingard obbliga il suo socio Almayer ad ospitare Peter che si innamora di sua moglie.
