Dopo una lunga carriera al comando di navi schiaviste, il capitano di marina Hoxworth riceve un po' di terra in eredità a Honululu. Abbandona così la vita di mare e tenta di trasformarsi in agricoltore. La lavorazione della terra non gli dà però grandi risultati, ma nel sottosuolo della sua proprietà trova il petrolio. In breve diventa ricchissimo e può così acquistare alri terreni fino a diventare proprietario di quasi tutta l'isola. Nella sua posizione favorisce il passaggio delle Hawaii agli Stati Uniti. Eventi rivuluzionari, corruzione, pestilenze ed esempi morali condiscono superficialmente questo romanzone familiare che non manca di spettacolarità. Musiche di Henry Mancini.
