Il sommergibile atomico Neptune della classe "Gray Lady" sta tornando alla base dopo un'uscita per esercitazioni, felicemente conclusa. L'equipaggio festeggia l'ufficiale in seconda che sta per rilevare il comando dal capitano Samuelson. Un mercantile norvegese però sperona il Neptune che precipita a 450 metri di profondità, in una zona franosa e percorsa da insidiosissime correnti. Scattano le operazioni di soccorso (ci sono solo 41 superstiti, su un equipaggio di 93 uomini), mentre a bordo il capitano Samuelson è troppo sconvolto per essere ancora efficiente. Fondamentale risulta l'intervento di un minuscolo sommergibile, lo Snack, pilotato dal suo inventore, capitano Gates, e non ancora collaudato.
